On the 8th April a landlord, Josefina Velazquez, was found guilty of lying to her young student tenants between 2022 - 2024, and extorting extra money from them for deposits unfairly. The court found that Ms Velazquez, 62, had offered tenants lower deposits than the amount she actually charged, making them believe she had the rights to do so, preying on their vulnerability and eagerness to secure accommodation.

Councillor Richard Eddy said: "We want to make sure that tenants feel confident speaking up when they have an issue with their landlord, and we will look at taking action against any Bristol landlord or agent who systematically misleads their tenants."
The rogue landlord, who pleaded guilty to three charges, was ordered to work with Bristol City Council by District Judge Matthews, and ordered to pay £11,000 in fines, including a refund of £6,924 to the tenants.
